SOUTHPOINT STATEMENT ON ACCREDITATION OUTCOME AND BOOKINGS

SOUTHPOINT STATEMENT ON ACCREDITATION OUTCOME AND BOOKINGS

12 March 2021

Dear student,

We have been receiving a lot of queries from students (both returning and new students) in terms of bookings and coming to stay at SouthPoint for the commencement of the 2021 academic year. As home away from home to more than 800 NMU students, SouthPoint was advised by the Off Campus Housing Office (OCHO) that we do not have accreditation for the 2021 academic year on 2 March 2021.

Following this feedback, we have officially submitted an appeal on 11 March 2021 to the Dean of students Mr Luthando Jack, and also cc’d the Director for student housing Mr Mxolisi Ncapayi to appeal the decision.

A detailed project plan has been submitted for consideration, together with supporting documents on how we plan to achieve our compliance with the minimum norms and standards.

Over and above the work that needs to be carried out this year as per our project plan, SouthPoint has already done the following as commitment to complying with the accreditation requirements from NMU;

  • Purchased additional Microwaves for all Kitchens in all three buildings
  • Purchased and installed hasp and staple locks for all rooms to allow for safe storage on all personal items.
  • Additional CCTV has been installed to allow better monitoring of all spaces in the buildings
  • Upgraded electricals in the kitchens to allow for the extra microwaves

No bookings have been deleted and no evictions have been forced on any student with us while we wait for the outcome on our accreditation appeal. We appeal to all our students to not panic during this time as we are still engaging the University.

Regards,

SouthPoint

Hi Mahlatse – thanks for reaching out. This is dependent on the institution concerned. We continue to engage with the relevant stakeholders in order to ensure our tenants are successfully housed by end of the registration.

We are worried. The OCHO said all senior students should be registered to their residence by Friday this week. Can we at least move in while the appeal is in progress?

Hi Nomombulelo – thanks for reaching out. We are daily engaging with the institution for a swift response. Kindly remain patient for the time being as these discussions continue to take place.

Note that we would not be able to temporarily house anyone without the institution’s instruction or guidance thereof and as such continue to engage on the matter,

      Regards,
      SP
